World of Color Picnic Option at Disney’s California Adventure
By D’land Diva
My family is a little late in attending World of Color at California Adventure. By late, I mean that World of Color premiered in Spring 2010. We just recently were able to take in the amazing show.
World of Color is a night time show in which a story is projected on water. It has the same premise as Fantasmic! in that it is also a show that has water elements to it. World of Color, however, is a far superior show. I say this with confidence because, truly, this is the best show I have ever seen at the Disneyland Resort and I have been going to Disneyland at least once a year for the past thirty plus years.
I will be honest, this is not an easy show to get to see. It is not like you can just show up twenty minutes before the show and view it. No, viewing of the show is very calculated, with certain viewing areas designated by a fastpass return system. Yes, to get good seats, you must obtain a fastpass- and the good seats go fast so you have to get there to fastpass distribution place (next to Grizzly River Run) first thing after the park opens. The fastpasses to World of Color go fast, despite having two shows. The later show is sometimes easier to get passes for, especially if you are planning on arriving late to the park.
If you do not get fastpasses to World of Color this way, you may get them through a dining package at either lunch or dinner. If you would like a sit down place to eat, the Wine Country Traittoria offers a $30 per adult for lunch/$19 per child and $40 per adult for dinner/$21 per child World of Color Dining package. For those who are more budget minded, there is a picnic option. This option runs in the $15 range for adults. We chose the picnic option and were quite pleased. The portions are small and the food is not super tasty, but hey, you are really paying for the fastpasses for World of Color. The best part is that you can make Advanced Dining Reservations for both the dining package and picnic package here.
We chose to make an advance order for some picnic platters. Each picnic comes with a to go platter and your choice of water or soda. My husband chose the Antipasto Platter. It had several cheeses, crackers, a couple of slices of salami and prosciutto, an artichoke heart, pepper and sun dried tomato spread. Oh, and the best part? Chocolate Tiramisu cake. This was not a complete dinner for him, and I’m not sure it would have been complete for me either. Lucky for us, we don’t mind having a second dessert.
I chose the Mediterranean Platter. While this meal offered more food than my husband’s platter, it tasted somewhat bland. There was a grilled vegetable wrap (I suspect my vegetables were not completely grilled), a slaw with a tasty vinaigrette dressing, and a couscous salad which was the worst part of the meal for me. The lemon cake was fairly good, but a little slimy in texture, which made me wonder if it was in fact a cake at all.
We caught a glimpse of some of the other picnic meals, and the fried chicken platter actually looked pretty tasty. The picnic meals are all prepared ahead of time and stored in refrigerators. My husband I both feel that while the food was lacking in both taste and substance, it was a really convenient way to obtain World of Color fastpasses in a good seating area. For that reason, it was worth the money for us.
