If you are anything like me, you love those awesome free souvenirs you can get from amazing cast members at Walt Disney World. I love them all, from the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards to the celebration buttons. There is one freebie that isn’t talked about very often. As a matter of fact, when I was trying to research a few things for this particular article, I couldn’t find any information about the subject more current than 2015. What am I talking about? Disney Transportation collector cards.
So, what are Disney Transportation collector cards? They are a series of cards, three different types, dedicated to the three different modes of transportation that Walt Disney World offers. At last count, I believe there are about nineteen cards in total that you can collect. Each of the cards features a picture of the mode of transportation on the front, while the back of the card has little interesting facts about the modes of transportation. Three of the nineteen are dedicated to the Disney buses that take you to and from the parks and resorts. The three bus cards include The RTS, The Nova, and the most rare of the three according to one of the drivers we spoke to, The Gillig. We have managed to complete our bus card collection, including the rare The Gillg. Yay us!!
The next four cards are dedicated to the boat transportation offered at Walt Disney World. These are those boats that ferry you from Epcot to Hollywood Studios, or from your resort to Magic Kingdom or Disney Springs. The four boat transportation cards are Ferry Boat, Motor Cruiser, Motor Launch and Friendship Boat. Of these four, sadly, we only have one card. We don’t normally take the boats when we are on vacation, but on our last trip, we decided to try out taking The Friendship from Hollywood Studios to Epcot, so we did manage to get one of these cards. With three more to get in this series, I think we need to take the boat more.
The rest of the transportation cards are all dedicated to the most fun mode of transportation at Walt Disney World, the monorail. The twelve monorail cards needed to complete your collection are all titled Mark VI Monorail, but each card features a different Disney character on them. They consist of Buzz Lightyear, Figment, Jasmine, Jiminy Cricket, Sully, Simba, Donald Duck, Snow White, Mike Wazowski, Cinderella, Daisy Duck and Goofy. The monorail collection takes up the bulk of the collection, and again, we are sadly lacking in these particular cards, only managing to have one measly card out of twelve, Buzz Lightyear. I know, I know, we really need to step up our game on the boat and monorail cards. The problem is, we usually ride the monorail once during our vacation, to get to our coveted ‘Ohana reservation. The limited rides make it difficult to get these cards for us.
Now that I’ve given you the background of what the cards are, and which cards you need to collect, you are probably asking HOW you can get these cards. It’s really simple, all you have to do is ask the driver, captain or pilot. Not all of the drivers, captains and pilots have them, and when they do, it’s a limited amount, so they could run out quickly. They won’t offer the card to you, you must ask. If you happen to get a driver, captain or pilot who does not have them, don’t worry, just check with the next one as you board or disembark. I have also heard that you can ask at the Ticket and Transportation Center, as well as other Cast Members who may be working at the transportation loading areas, though I’m not sure if they will have them or not as we have never asked them. We usually just ask the driver, captain or pilot. I will say, for us, the monorail is more challenging, because you don’t always get to see the pilot. If you don’t see the pilot, you can’t ask if they have a card. If anyone reading this happens to be a Walt Disney World boat captain or monorail pilot, feel free to send some more cards my way to help our collection, wink wink, nudge nudge.
So, there you have it, the secret of the Disney Transportation collector cards. The best part of collecting them is they are totally free. It’s also a pretty cool way to get your younger kids excited about boarding a crowded bus. Maybe with the challenge of collecting the cards, they will find it more fun to ride the transportation to and from the parks.
