If you follow news of Walt Disney World Resort, you know that Epcot is in the midst of a major and magical transformation. There is much to look forward to as Walt Disney World Resort approaches it’s 50th anniversary in 2021, and, as part of the changes, an entirely new entrance and design to Epcot is underway. As Walt himself said, “Epcot will always be in a state of becoming.”
Part of the excitement of change is the anticipation of what’s to come. But as any kid who’s peeked at a Christmas gift knows, sometimes it’s just too hard to wait. Thankfully, Disney Imagineers understand the kid in all of us, and have opened a wonderful new exhibit to give us that sneak peek of exactly what Epcot is, as Walt said, “becoming.”
Walt Disney Imagineering Presents the Epcot Experience opened October 1 in the Odyssey Events Pavilion (between Test Track and the Mexico pavilion). Disney promotes this attraction as a place for guests to “discover a series of engaging exhibits that showcase the relentless innovation, energy and excitement driving the park’s unprecedented evolution!”
After visiting, I say it’s a place to be WOWed! The main exhibit is a circular theater with 360 screens. In the middle of the theater is a 3D model of Epcot. As you stand around the model and watch the screens, narration and music take you through all the changes coming to Epcot.
The WOW factor here, though, is the projection mapping which occurs on the model. As each new attraction is explained, the projection mapping, in combination with the 360 screens, completely transforms the room so you feel absolutely immersed in the exhibit.
You’ll begin with the upcoming Moana-themed exhibit, Journey of Water. By the time it’s over, you may get an urgent need to find some swim goggles. Then you’ll get a feel for what’s coming to the new Play Pavilion and see what it’s like to live in a digital world. Get those mix-tapes ready, for soon you’ll be hearing all about Guardians of the Galaxy. And when Remy visits to tell you about Ratuillie’s Adventure, don’t forget to check out Spaceship Earth. It suddenly resembles as giant ball of – what else – cheese! Finally, cast your eyes upward, and you may see Mary Poppins floating by on Cherry Tree Lane. Can you imagine that? Take a peek on our YouTube channel.
The show is really quite fun and definitely builds excitement for all Epcot will be offering as we approach Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary. But there’s more to see at the Epcot Experience! Walk around and you’ll find newly designed posters depicting attractions and events of Epcot. Each poster parallels Epcot’s new “retro” logo design and certainly has that “80’s vibe.”
In addition to the posters, you’ll find fun PhotoPass opportunities! Grab a balloon on Cherry Tree Lane or appear to sit in the ride vehicle for Guardians of the Galaxy. Or, if you’d prefer, you can pose in a set paying tribute to The Land or under the light-up marquee featuring the new Epcot logo. PhotoPass photographers are available at each special photo opportunity.
While waiting for your turn with the photographers, be sure to check out some of the props used in Mary Poppins Returns and Guardians of the Galaxy. Mary’s bag, umbrella and the Certificate of Shares of stock from Fidelity Fiduciary Bank Limited were my favorites!
You can also see models of the new pavilion which will be in the World Celebration neighborhood (replacing the Fountain of Nations). This multi-level structure will be feature live events, a wonderful fireworks viewing spot, and the home base for Epcot’s festivals. The trees on the top level will really create a park-like atmosphere (and probably block your view of the enormous Guardians of the Galaxy building when standing in World Showcase and looking back toward Spaceship Earth.)
If you’re hungry or just looking to sit for a bit, there are tables throughout the Odyssey Events Pavilion. You’ll find a snack bar offering popcorn, a few ice-cream treats, chips, pretzels and drinks. Restrooms are also available inside the Pavilion.
So if you’re at Epcot in the next year, make it a point to stop by the Epcot Experience. You’ll find it’s an experience like no other!
