If you’re like me, dealing with motion sickness is not something you really want to do while you are trying to have a good time at any Disney park. Unfortunately for me, I can get motion sick if the person next to me is moving too much- so I really have to pay attention to what I am doing and what rides I am going on! This is one of the many reasons I love the Disney parks, because I can barely ride anything at most theme parks, but Disney is so family friendly it gives me many more options. If at all possible, I like to just avoid the rides that make me sick, but of course we all know that isn’t always possible. So what CAN you do once you’ve been on a ride that makes you motion sick? Here are a few simple things I do…

1) I make sure the person I am with knows that the ride will most likely make me sick and that we will have to take some time afterwords for me to feel better. Most likely family members will know this, but if you are going to the park with a friend or new date, they may not know and it’s best to just communicate with them.

2) Don’t eat before or after you ride. It maybe different for you, but I like to give myself a 30 minute window on either side of going on the ride. This will give my tummy some time to figure out what it’s doing an be happy enough to move on to the next adventure, whether that is eating, or going on the ride.

3) Avoid going on another ride right away. Even if you are going on something as simple as “it’s a small world” there is the chance that the movement of the ride is just going to keep you from getting better. I like to take this time to do a little shopping or to head into a standby line that is 30 minutes or more. This way, once I do get on a ride my body has reset and I don’t have to worry about staying sick.

4) Space out the rides that are going to make you sick. Going on Star Tours and then Tower of Terror is NOT a good idea. Of course, if you want to get it all out of the way in one go around, be my guest. But I’ve noticed that I get sicker and it takes longer for me to be feeling fully myself if I try to do more than one ‘motion sickness educing’ ride.

5) Have a Sprite and some crackers on hand. Yes, I know I just said don’t eat, but eating something bland may help you get better quicker. Personally I just go with the Sprite because the fizz helps my stomach, so it is best to know your body and what you might need.

6) If you get really sick, consider motion sick pills. I know it seems crazy to take medicine just to go on a ride, but don’t be ashamed. You need to do what you need to do to have a good experience yourself.

7) Offer to sit this one out. If your spouse can take your kids on this ride by themselves, let them. This will be a good time for you to cool off and get a drink of water and maybe do a little bit of secret shopping or you can look at your map and work on your plan for the day. But also know your body. (have you noticed this is a big one?) Just because the ride says people with motion sickness should not ride, doesn’t mean that if you do it will ruin your day. Like I said, I can get sick at the shake of my chair, but I can go on most rides at the Disney Parks.
