The Captain’s Grille, located just off of the lobby at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, is a nautically themed restaurant that you should put on your “to-do” list.  Sitting at your table, it actually feels like you are on a ship – complete with portholes and “window” scene that changes as the sun rises and sets. The theme isn’t as over the top as some Disney restaurants, however.  The menu boasts options for both fish eaters and landlubbers alike, so everyone is sure to find something that they like.

Now, to tell you the truth, I had never really heard much about this restaurant before our last trip.  We were on the Disney Dining Plan, and I was looking for a few non-character options that we had never been to before.  A reservation was available here, so I took it.  We were spending the day at Epcot, and figured we could walk over, eat, and be back in time for Illuminations that night.  The timing worked out perfectly, and it was actually nice to get away from the crowds for a little bit.
My husband and I both have food allergies, so we are used to having the chef come out and go over the menu with us.  We always note the allergies on the reservation, and have never had to mention it to the wait staff. We didn’t give it much thought when the server didn’t ask us about allergies.  We went ahead and ordered our meals, and then while we waited we noticed that the chef kept coming out to various tables to talk with them (must have been a high-allergy night!).  When our food arrived, it was only then that the waitress realized that we too had allergies, and took our food back and brought the chef out to discuss our choices.  It wasn’t really a big deal, everything we had chosen was safe for us. Our meals were brought right back, but I am telling this portion of the story as a reminder that even though you put it on the reservation, you need to let your server know that you have food allergies.  Disney does an awesome job of preparing foods according to their guests needs, and really takes food allergies seriously.  Sometimes things get missed, so it is good speak up.

My husband ordered the stone-ground mustard-rubbed New York strip steak, which came with herb-roasted fingerling potatoes, seasonal vegetables, spiced veal jus, and cipollini onions ($28.99). I ordered the grilled rib eye steak, which came with cheddar-bacon mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and herb butter ($27.99).  Both were tasty cuts of beef, and cooked to perfection.  I really enjoyed the mashed potatoes too.  My son ordered the kids complete meaty macaroni meal, but without the meat!  They were very good about accommodating his menu changes.  His meal came with a side salad and an ice-cream sundae for dessert.

For our desserts, I chose the Turtle Cheesecake ($5.49). My husband selected the Blueberry-Cherry Pie, which had toasted oatmeal streusel and lemon Gelato on top ($7.49).  It was an interesting mix of flavors, and if you like blueberries and cherries (which my husband does, but I don’t) he insisted that it was a really good dessert!  Then they gave us each a little take home bags of really good lemon poppy-seed bread for our midnight snack – yum!

The Captain’s Grille requires one (1) table credit on the Disney Dining Plan (for both 2012 and 2013), and reservations are accepted, but not always necessary.  The restaurant also serves lunch and a breakfast buffet daily.
