Most people already realize that Walt Disney World boasts more than enough restaurants to keep any hungry guest appeased. These restaurants are available at all parks as well as all Walt Disney World resorts. My husband and I have a favorite quick-service resort restaurant where we love to eat when possible. Port Orleans French Quarter’s Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory is a little bit of southern hospitality and New Orleans charm all wrapped in one package of delicious food.
We recently stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter. French Quarter is easily our favorite of all of the Disney resorts we have stayed at thus far and you can read my review of the resort itself here. You can also read JollyFrogger Diva’s review of French Quarter here, as it’s her favorite also. Though we spend the bulk of our time at Walt Disney World in the parks, therefore dining in parks, we knew we had to reserve at least one meal for Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory. We decided to save our resort meal day for our last meal of the trip, leaving on a delicious note.
Sassagoula can be found on the left-hand side of the lobby after entering Port Orleans French Quarter. The restaurant and dining area had a major renovation back in 2016, creating a more streamlined look throughout now where it used to be host to very large Mardi Gras masks boldly hung from the ceiling.
The order stations are set up much as most of the resort quick-service restaurants are set up. Stations are divided into food categories, sandwiches and burgers in one area, pasta and pizza at another, and many of the Sassagoula favorites are at another station. The Walt Disney World Resort crowd favorite, the beignet’s, can now be ordered at Scat Cat’s Club next door to the restaurant. I’m not sure why Disney thought this would be a better alternative to serving the beignets at Sassagoula, we found that it now takes much longer to have the beignets prepared and delivered to you than it did before, causing a long line in Scat Cat’s Club all the time.
Naturally, throughout our week there, my husband had to stop into Scat Cat’s Club and order the beignets, he adores them. I’ve been very vocal that I’m one of the few on earth who has never quite been blown away by the beignets, but I do realize I’m in the minority with this. If you are on the dining plan, these are a snack credit and actually are a very good use of the snack credit. You will receive three fairly large beignets, my husband couldn’t even finish them.
This trip, my husband decided he wanted to give the Shrimp Po Boy with house-made chips a try. Obviously, he found it delicious. There’s not much, if anything, he has tried at Sassagoula’s that he hasn’t loved. The shrimp was perfectly breaded and cooked, making for a crispy addition to his Po Boy. For dessert, he decided to try one of the large oatmeal cookies on display. He found it to be moist and very good.
I discovered the Shrimp and Grits on our last trip to Port Orleans French Quarter and I couldn’t wait to order them again this time. Once again, they were amazing. I don’t really like very spicy foods, so a lot of the Creole recipes featured at Sassagoula are almost too spicy for me. The shrimp and grits, however, are perfect. The portion is huge, too large for me to finish for sure, and the seasoning only enhances the flavor without overloading it with spiciness. You can also have them add cheese and chives to the top just before they serve it to you for a little extra flavor. I’m from Georgia, and I ONLY take my grits with cheese in it, so naturally, I had to add some. For dessert, I chose the strawberry cheesecake. I’m sure I have mentioned in previous posts that I adore cheesecake, so I couldn’t resist. It was a perfectly creamy and delicious ending to a scrumptious meal.
Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory meals are considered a quick-service dining credits if you have the dining plan and there are a lot of food options to choose from. Whether you are staying at Port Orleans French Quarter or not, you are always welcome to stop by Sassagoula and indulge in some delicious food, in fact, many guests of other resorts do just that. I highly recommend that you try it for yourself, with so many satisfied and happy guests who dine here, that has to mean they are a quality dining establishment.
