Before having children, I did not even know there was a barber shop in the parks at Walt Disney World. Harmony Barber Shop is tucked away in a little corner on Main Street U.S.A. near the front of the Magic Kingdom, and for some reason I had just never noticed it was there. In researching cool things for kids to do before our first trip with our daughter, I stumbled upon someone talking about the My First Haircut experience. My daughter was going to be eleven months old when she first visited Walt Disney World, and since she was born with a head full of hair, she was ready for a haircut by then. I figured it would be a great chance to make that particular milestone extra special by throwing in some Disney magic.
Walk-ins are accepted at Harmony Barber Shop, but only on a first-come, first-serve basis and the wait can be quite long. Reservations are recommended, and you can call 407-939-7529 to schedule an appointment between the hours of 9am and 5pm seven days a week. They offer haircuts for both adults and children, as well as a variety of other services such as beard trims and colored hair gel. The My First Haircut experience is much more than a simple haircut- they also give your child a set of Mickey Ears that say “My 1st Haircut”, a certificate with the child’s name and date, and even a lock of hair wrapped in tissue paper for those sentimental parents like me who want to save it for their child’s baby book.
I was concerned about how my daughter would handle having to sit still for an extended period of time, since she was so young. I tried to schedule an early appointment so she wouldn’t be too tired from a day of fun and we ended up with one of the later ones, but the Cast Members at Harmony Barber Shop are experts in dealing with children and had everything under control. They sat her down in the chair and covered her hands and legs in Mickey Stickers. She was a bit confused at first, but then began picking off the stickers for closer examination and even a quick taste.
While she was distracted, the barber started cutting her hair and made quick work of trimming it up and making it look nice. He was done well before the amusement of the stickers wore off. The Cast Members were great with her- they were patient with her and definitely didn’t mind that her sentimental mother was snapping a million pictures of the moment. The even placed the “My 1st Haircut” ears on her head before showing her a mirror so Mom could get some great pictures of that too.
The cost of the My First Haircut is $19, which is money well spent when you consider everything that comes with it. If you are going to be visiting Walt Disney World and you want to do something special that’s a little more out of the ordinary, consider the Harmony Barber Shop. Whether it’s for your child’s first haircut or your 400th, the Cast Members will be sure to leave you looking your best and sprinkle a little Disney magic on you too.
