Hollywood Studios has always been just a half day park for our family. Typically, we go to the park in the morning, take a few snacks along, and plan it so we end up in another park or Disney Springs for a late lunch. But that option wasn’t available to us when we traveled with extended family and wanted to stay until the Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular show. With few counter service choices available, we settled on ABC Commissary because it seemed to have the most varied menu. Unfortunately, the experience did nothing to change our minds about eating in this park.
The restaurant is located next to the Sci-Fi Dine In Theater Restaurant and harkens back to the golden days of the movie studio backlot cafeteria. Decorated in lavish Art Deco style, the interior features displays with memorabilia and photos from current ABC shows. There are TVs all around showing an endless loop of ABC favorites.
Tip: Check dining hours as they change frequently and are often seasonal. On the night we went, Hollywood Studios was open until 9 pm, but Pizza Rizzo had closed quite a bit earlier.
There’s lots of indoor and outdoor seating and mobile ordering is available. You order at the counter and your food is brought to your table. The restaurant accepts the Disney Dining Plan.
We opted for three different dinner entrees. The lunch menu is slightly different from the dinner menu, but both offer burger, salad and chicken options.
My husband and father-in-law both got the Southwest Burger ($14.99), a Premium Burger topped with Pepper Jack Cheese, Guacamole, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato and Cheddar Jalapeño Poppers served with Steak Fries. They said this was OK, your average Disney burger, but having the guacamole was a plus.
My daughter wasn’t really happy with any of the entrees, and reluctantly ordered the Chicken and Ribs Combo Platter ($17.19), which is Smoked Barbecue Spare Ribs and Roasted Chicken served with Coleslaw and Steak Fries. The ribs had hardly any meat on them, and you can barely even see them in the photo I took.
My daughter really did not like the steak fries, which were thick and kind of soggy. We had actually visited the restaurant briefly a few months before that for a snack and my daughters had tried out a side order of steak fries ($3.29). The fries ended up not getting finished, a rarity in our house.
I had the Mediterranean Salad with Salmon ($13.99), one of several healthy salad options on the menu. The salad features Salmon on a bed of Fresh Mixed Greens with Cherry Tomatoes, Red Onions, Pepperoncini, Kalmata Olives and Feta Cheese tossed in a Mediterranean Vinaigrette and served with Hummus and Pita Chips. The salmon was actually fairly well-prepared, but the pita chips were soggy and greasy, which took away from the taste of the salad as a whole. It should also be noted that there was just one vegetarian option: ordering the Mediterranean salad with no meat.
All in all, this food served the purpose of tiding us over until the show, but I felt some of the entrees were overpriced (especially the Chicken and Rib Combo) for what you got and the quality of the food wasn’t the best. I think in the future, we will stick to our habit of either eating before or eating after going
to this park.
