Great Moments in History…Muppet Style

October 2, 2016 saw the debut of a cute show featuring none other than the Muppets at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Despite the fact that the show, The Muppets Present…Great Moments in American History, takes place nine times a day, our family didn’t get the chance to see it until June of 2017. It just seemed like we were never in the right place at the right time. This day in June, however, we happened to be walking by when we noticed cast members roping off the area in front and to the right of Hall of Presidents in preparation for the show to begin, so we knew we needed to stick around so we wouldn’t miss it yet again.

 

 

 

 

 

We were certainly glad we did! The show opens with the most notable Muppet, Kermit the Frog, leaning out the middle window in the top of the Hall of Presidents building. Kermit launches into an original song, Great Moments in History, to introduce the show. He is then joined by the beloved and patriotic (to America, of course) Sam Eagle. Sam Eagle informs the audience (that’s us) that today they will be relaying the story of the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.

 

 

 

 

 

After announcing which story will be told, Kermit and Sam are joined by that crazy jokester, Fozzy Bear, as well as Gonzo and of course the only star in her own eyes, Miss Piggy. As Sam Eagle moves to the middle window to begin narrating the story of “great Americans…and others” the sound of patriotic music begins playing. Now, they wouldn’t be the Muppets if there wasn’t a little chaos, right? As the story begins, a group of chickens pop up in the window and begin disrupting Sam’s story.

Shooing the chickens away, Kermit appears as none other than Paul Revere, however, Miss Piggy wants her share of the spotlight, so she insinuates herself into the show claiming to be Paula Revere. As Kermit tells her she can’t be in the show (kind of like Ricky and Lucy, right?) she becomes very offended, vowing that they will see her again.  More chaos ensues as Fozzy Bear is cracking his silly jokes and Gonzo rides in to deliver Kermit’s (or Paul Revere’s) horse, which is a stick horse. Suddenly Miss Piggy makes her presence known again by bursting into song, as the “star of the show” should.

As Miss Piggy is singing, more mayhem takes place as everyone is talking over each other and the chickens make clucking sounds. Kermit comes to the rescue by blowing a whistle and throwing out patriotic red, white and blue banners from the window and leading the whole gang in the song he sang at the beginning, Great Moments in History (but just the American parts) adding at the end that even though it’s just the American parts, we still love the English people as well.

The show itself last a short 7 minutes and 20 seconds, which is actually perfect as the audience stands outside and stares up into the windows, especially if it’s one of those steamy, hot days. We loved the show, it was amusing and fun, just as the Muppets always are. I highly recommend you make time in your day to see it if you are at Magic Kingdom, you won’t be disappointed, and hey, who can’t spare 7 minutes and 20 seconds, right?
