While planning my daughter’s fairy tale photoshoot last summer, I knew I wanted to capture one of my favorite scenes from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs- Snow White at the wishing well. Unfortunately, Snow White’s rag dress isn’t a very common one…. You won’t find it down the princess aisle at Walmart or Target, nor will you come across it at the Disney Store or Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. You CAN find several versions on Etsy… but unfortunately for me, while these dresses are beautiful, they generally cost several hundreds of dollars… which I can understand. These dresses are made by talented seamstresses who produce high quality work and deserve to be paid for it. But as a mom with three small kids (and one on the way), spending hundreds of dollars for one costume just wasn’t in my budget. So, praying for a miracle and because I had such great experience in finding a Wendy dress from Etsy seller, Marilyn Rigaud of SoCute2, (you can read my review here) I decided to reach out and see if there was any possibility of her re-creating the dress for me.
When I contacted Marilyn, I explained to her my concept for the dress, and sent her two photos… one of a similar styled dress I had found on Etsy, and one of the actual image from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs so she could see exactly what I wanted to replicate. Not only did Marilyn agree to make the dress, but she agreed to do so in exchange for a review and pictures of my daughter wearing it around Disneyland (which is where I hoped to capture my fairy tale images… after all, what better place to take pictures of Snow White’s wishing well than actually by Snow White’s wishing well?)
While I was elated that Marilyn had agreed to customize a dress particularly for my daughter, I was even more pleased with the final product. SoCute2 surpassed all of my expectations and hopes…. You can tell how much time was spent on details, from the colors of the fabrics, to the patchwork on the dresses, and she was even able to add a “Peter Pan” style collar (something she originally didn’t think she’d be able to do). The measurements for my daughter came back perfectly. It truly is a beautiful dress, and I think I was even more excited than my daughter (who couldn’t wait to try it on and see how she looked in her new dress). Marilyn had offered to rip the dress for me to make it look more authentic, but personally, I couldn’t bear the thought of tearing up such a beautiful dress, so I sacrificed some authenticity to preserve the dress (and also prevent possible fraying if I through it in the washing machine.)
Which speaking of washing machines, this dress is 100% machine washable! As a parent, I cannot tell you how happy this makes me…. Rather than worrying about stains or spending tons of time washing it by hand, I can just toss it in the washing machine and be good to go. The dress is lightweight (which is ideal when traveling to Disneyland or Disney World where you can be battling heat or humidity), it isn’t itchy (no complaints from your little princess or scrambling to find a change of clothes instead of riding Space Mountain because your princess is uncomfortable), and very durable (which is nice, because other than paying an arm and a leg for a dress to fall apart after one or two uses, it can be worn multiple times without worrying about rips, tears, or other issues destroying your dress).
Another great thing I love about SoCute2 is how affordable they are… the Snow White rags dress I found on other sites would’ve been several hundreds of dollars. The one SoCute2 designed for me is only listed on her site as $32… a fraction of the cost, and one that was 100% tailored off of my daughter’s measurements and customized just for her. You seriously can’t beat that.
Plus, I love how unique the dress is! One of the best parts about dressing up at Disneyland or Disney World, is all of the extra attention you receive from cast members and other guests. We had numerous guests come up and compliment my daughter and tell her how beautiful she looked, and she also received special recognition from cast members. In fact, when we were being sorted for the Princess Fantasy Faire to meet princesses, the cast members chose to put my daughter in the line that would guarantee us that she met Snow White based on her costume. She also had great conversations with Mulan, Ariel, Rapunzel, and Flynn Rider over her attire and they all loved how unique it was.
As mentioned before, we were able to capture some of those unique poses by Snow White’s wishing well, by the Snow White statues, and other places around the park. Unfortunately, there always seemed to be a crowd around, so we weren’t able to completely isolate my daughter for the wishing well shots, but she still had a magical time.
And whether you want a unique costume for a birthday party, Halloween or Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, your next runDisney race, wearing around the parks, creating your own fairy tale photo shoot, or just showing off your Disney side around the house while playing dress up, SoCute2 has a costume for you!
